These powerful programs focus on increasing the communication abilities of adults with autism through movement, yoga, visual arts and music. The artists seek to establish comfortable environments in which to practice important relational skills such as eye contact, verbal and nonverbal skills, participation, communication and interaction.
This unique course works well with nonverbal and verbal adults with autism. The several nonverbal adults have smiled, laughed and danced at the possibility to communicate through the arts.

The Deborah Jean Arts in Hospitals and Hospice Program
Launched in the Fall of 2008, The Deborah Jean Arts in Hospitals and Hospice Program offers programming to area hospitals including NIH Children’s Inn, Georgetown Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children, Children’s Hospital, Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Allies in the Arts
In association with the American Red Cross, ArtStream brings the arts
to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Programs combine music, visual
art, poetry and storytelling all brought to bedsides of returning veterans who are recieving treatment. Wounded warriors and their families alike
benefit from active engagment in the arts, both creatively and
therapeutically. Research suggests active engagment in the arts helps
alleviate
anxiety and depression and may be able to shorten hospital stays.
Allies in the Arts Webinar
ArtStream's own Ermyn King will be joined by Judy Rollins of the American Red Cross to host a webinar for those people interested in bringing the arts to Wonded Warriors on July 20th at 2:00 pm. Hosted by the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, this webinar will introduce participants to population-specific requirements for bringing creative expression to military hospitals. They will also explore common injuries from our current wars and the resultant issues they present for the Warriors, their families and the artist. Ermyn and Judy will share their experiences, their successes and their challenge in working with Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center with ArtStream's Allies in the Arts program.

The Pirate’s Jules: Highly interactive, for kids age 3-12. Focuses on themes of the importance of the arts, play, fun, interaction with others, and setting aside the fixation on material things. Great for reminding us all to make the best of the here and now, and appreciate the treasure of family and friends.
Pursuing the Runes: Pursuing the Runes is a new interactive performance that explores ways to cope with grief and/or illness. In this production, the seven stages of grief are presented in a metaphor, which intrigue and captivate children of all ages.

The show gives life to the grief stages by representing them as characters that accompany a young girl on her journey to rescue her father from the clutches of a ferocious dragon. Set in front of the backdrop of Norse mythology, young Johanna sets out to track her father through the nine worlds with her dog, Knut. Along the way, they encounter a wacky troll named Steig Olafsen, who just won’t take “no” for an answer. Together they find clever ways to outwit the annoying and cunning Loki, the Norse god of mischief and the wicked minions he throws in their way.
Upbeat rock music accompanies this colorful, lively and exciting puppet and live-actor show. Recommended audiences, age 5 and up.

Emily’s Dragon: specifically written for children dealing with disabilities or illness. Deals with themes of “seeing your inner power, or magic within.” Appropriate for ages 5-10.
A Christmas Carol: the classic Dickens tale, told interactively, highlighting themes of caring, giving and selflessness. Great for helping kids become aware of reaching-out to those less fortunate. Appropriate for ages 5-12.
Adoption Support
Leadership, Empowerment and Action Program (L.E.A.P.)
L.E.A.P. is a youth development program that is open to middle school youth in Montgomery County who are adopted or in foster care with adoption plans. This project is funded by the Jim and Carol Trawick Foundation. It is a collaboration between the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.), Interages, Through the Kitchen Door and the Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts.
In November and December 2010, ArtStreamer Jennie Lutz led three drama based social skills workshops for these young people and it was a wonderful success. We look forward to working more with adoption support groups in the future!
Self-Advocacy Through the Arts
Self-Advocacy Workshops
These innovative workshops are specially designed for adults with intellectual disabilities who want to stand up for themselves. Through body-language and role-play techniques, a trained ArtStream teaching artist will work one-on-one to teach you and your group how to feel comfortable and confident in public and social situations. Self-Advocacy is a skill that many people struggle with, but the ability to make your own choices and stand behind them is vital to every day life.
ArtStream held its first Self-Advocacy Workshop on Wednesday, April 20th 2011 through the ARC of Montgomery County.
Want to bring Self-Advocacy Workshops to your community? Contact us at info@art-stream.org.
