Veteran Gift-Wrap - November 30, 2011
On Tuesday, November 30, ArtStream's Gaithersburg Inclusive Theatre Company and friends assembled and wrapped gift packages to be delivered to Vietnam Veterans.
We had several actors, staff, mentors, volunteers, parents and counselors working along side each other to wrap items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, gloves, coffee, cocoa and much more. We also handmade holiday cards for each veteran thanking them for their service.
Friends of ArtStream
Friends of ArtStream are region-based parent/guardian groups that work with ArtStream to organize fundraisers, social events and Give-Back projects. Our Friends of ArtStream are also vital link between the ArtStream staff and the needs of our clients.

On-Stage Mentors

ArtStream is looking for volunteers of all ages to act as on-stage mentors for our 2013 Inclusive Theatre productions in Arlington, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg and Raleigh.
Inclusive Theatre Companies are scripted acting companies featuring adults with intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities and adults on the Autism Spectrum The Companies are directed by trained theatre professionals. An original script is developed during the rehearsal process through improvisation techniques.
Classes and companies meet once weekly for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Mentors are the unsung heroes of these productions. They keep the dialogue flowing and the energy up. They act as a safety net to help keep our actors on task during rehearsals and highly confident onstage. Mentors are sometimes paired with actors with special needs (an arm for a woman who is visually impaired to hold on to) or actors with heavy onstage responsibilities (acting as a sounding board for the main character, repeating important lines so the audience understands). Mentors are always their own characters onstage and take on their own responsibilities backstage as well. No prior experience with the disabled community is required. This volunteer opportunity is a unique combination of improvisation, new play development, acting and disabilities counseling.
For more info, please contact us at volunteers@art-stream.org.

Alex, High School Volunteer
I began working with ArtStream as a backstage assistant in the spring of 2006. My closest friend, Michael, has worked with the company from the beginning. I decided to volunteer with the spring acting class. I enjoyed it so much that I continued to assist for the spring and summer classes. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the actors and the instructor, Nicolette. I am disappointed that I did not start working with the company earlier.
Isaiah, Volunteer
The most powerful and potent art finds a way to actively engage and grow community. As a young artist, it is critical to seek opportunities that support personal and professional maturation. My time volunteering with the talented artists of ArtStream has been a highlight in my career. Sensitive, caring, and supportive, the team brings an unparalleled passion to their students and their teaching. Rehearsing with the group was often a highlight in my week because of the sheer joy and excitement shared amongst the ensemble. My time volunteering continues to sustain me as I strive to grow as an artist. Many thanks to Nicolette, Patti W., Patti K. for welcoming me warmly into the Artstream family.
Employment

Working with ArtStream is rewarding and fun. Training is available and is hands-on and on-site for inclusive classes, companies and arts in healthcare.
