George Tilson

George is a local playwright, librettist and composer whose plays include Vodu; Amelia; Rudy Doo; The Poet Warriors; and Singing in Lucky Courts among many others. Rudy Doo - a theatrical romp about a brain-injured hockey player and a writer with cerebral palsy - has had a number of readings and won second place in the 2007 Baltimore Playwrights Festival. Vodu - for which George wrote both book and lyrics - was first presented in 2000 as a song cycle called Marie LaVeau: A Voodoo Legend at New York Theatre Workshop, Directed by Michael Greif. It was subseqently produced in New York by the Harlem Repertory Theatre at City College in 2004.  In the summer and fall of 2010, his musical The Poet Warriors - for which George wrote libretto and score - was produced by the Washington DC Capital Fringe Festival where it was well received by audiences and reviewers alike.

George has had readings of his plays at the Kennedy Center's Page to Stage festival and BPF in Baltimore. His short plays Adonis Diner and Holler are being presented as staged readings by The Players Club in New York in September of 2011.

While an undergraduate at Trinity University in San Antonio, George studied under Paul Baker, co-founder of the Dallas Theatre Center, and the playwright Preston Jones (The Texas Trilogy). He is a member of the Playwrights Gymnasium of Washington, DC and the Dramatists Guild of America. George is proud to be affiliated with TransCen, Inc., serving as the organization's Senior Vice President since 1989. TransCen is dedicated to improving the lives of youth and adults with disabilities and other life challenges.  Prior to TransCen, George worked as a classroom teacher and program evaluator.
