Annetta Dexter Sawyer

Annetta Dexter Sawyer is a local artist who works primarily in the areas of dance/movement theater, poetry, and visual arts. She was recently the co-recipient of a Creative Grants Project from the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Annetta has a Master’s in Performing Arts for Dance & Theater from American University and her first degree was from Rutgers College as a certified teacher in English & Communications. She has danced her whole life performing as a youth for Verona, Italy’s L’Ente del Opera with the Kirov Ballet’s summer residencies. She followed her interest in the performing arts throughout her early education and continued Dance/Performance Studies through the Douglass College Dance Department while an undergraduate. In the D.C. area she presents dance/theater pieces as a soloist and in past years as the Independent Dance Collective. She has performed for several other local artists and currently practices at The Center for Movement Theatre as she prepares for the Spring Season with Dance Performance Group & (hopefully!) Faction of Fools Theater. She enjoys work with special needs populations giving them an exceptional opportunity through imagery in movement which fosters self-expression & a sense of self-worth. Annetta integrates movement with somatic learning transforming disability into ability, & an artistic one at that!
